Get ready for another year at Common Growth!

Common Growth team

Common Growth volunteers

We’ve been working hard all winter to get the garden ready for another year of growing fun. We’ve built a pergola, and a new raised bed, repaired the greenhouse after heavy storms (!), planted bulbs, turned compost, dug manure into the soil, repaired and painted a bench that we found on the street and shared numerous bowls of hearty soup!

The garden is usually open every Sunday afternoon from 2-5, and during the Telegraph Hill Festival we are putting on a couple of extra events. On Saturday the 22nd of March the garden is open from 2-5 for the ‘The Big Dig’ – a nationwide project organised by Capital Growth to get more people down to their local community gardens to get involved with food growing!

And on Saturday the 4th and Sunday the 5th of April it’s ‘Art in the Garden’ day as part of the ‘Open Studios’ weekend! Come and join us between 2-5 pm to help paint the fence inside our garden. Together with local artist Myah we are creating the Longest Artwork in New Cross (15 metres)! No need to bring any paint, but spare paint brushes are appreciated. Make sure to wear some old clothes.

We’ve been awarded some funding by the local council to organise more gardening workshops for kids and adults in collaboration with Frendsbury Community Gardens in Brockley. This is great news for all, as the workshops are free for all to attend, informative, practical & fun, and they help us to develop the garden. So do come along if you can! A full programme will be confirmed shortly, but the first workshops will be as follows:

Saturday 12th of April – Let’s get sowing and growing!

10.00-12.00 Frendsbury Community Garden, Frendsbury Road, Brockley, SE4 2LB

13.30-15.30 Common Growth Community Garden, Sandbourne Road, New Cross, SE4 2NS

Hints and tips for sowing seeds (conditions, compost)
Hardening off, Pricking out and Potting on seedlings
Practical activities & seed pots to take home!

The workshops are informal and fun, and a great way to learn a few more gardening skills and share tips with other gardeners. If you would like to attend or want more information, then please text Rich on 07901 360321 or email commongrowthuk@gmail.com giving the name of attendees and a contact telephone number and which course at which garden you’d like to attend. Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. All courses are free, but we suggest a £3 voluntary donation to help cover the costs of materials.

See you at Common Growth!

Busy Bees at Common Growth

The beautiful wildflower display at the Common Growth Community Garden is attracting lots of bees, bumblebees and other amazing insects. Here some pictures from last Sunday. Do come and have a look and enjoy our lovely garden some time. We are open on Sunday afternoons from 2-5pm – hope to see you there! If you’d like more info on how to get involved in the garden, or join us for our permaculture workshops,  email commongrowthuk@gmail.com

Everyone can do their bit to help our bees by joining in with the 1000 Sunflowers for New Cross campaign that is organised by Grow Wild and New X-ing. Look out for sunflower related events at www.growwild.org.uk.

Workshop on organic pest control methods: Jun 8

Grow Wild and Common Growth are inviting you to another free permaculture gardening workshop at the Common Growth Community Garden on Sandbourne Rd. The workshops are informal and fun, and it’s a great way to learn a few more gardening skills and share tips with other gardeners. Saturday’s course is on pests, and although this might not sound glamorous, every gardener knows how annoying it is when your salad crop gets munched up by snails overnight, or your beans attract black fly. So come and find out how to control these problems without using chemical pesticides, but by using organic permaculture methods.

Sat 8 June 10.30 – 12.30 Insects: Friend or Foe?
~ Learn to identify pests
~ Organic pest control methods
~ Recognising beneficial insects and how to encourage them to your garden
~ Practical activity: planting flowers which attract beneficial insects to the garden.
If you would like to attend the workshop, or like more information, then please text Rich on 07901 360321 or email commongrowthuk@gmail.com giving the name of attendees and a contact telephone number. Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. All courses are free, but we suggest a £3 voluntary donation to help cover the costs of materials.

Also, don’t forget that the garden is open on Sunday afternoons from 2.00pm to 5.00pm. We are always looking for more enthusiastic gardeners to get involved – no gardening experience necessary, just come and enjoy the garden!
Looking forward to seeing you there.

February the 3rd: SOUP-er Sunday at Common Growth

Hi Everyone,

The dark and miserable month of January is nearly over and slowly our daylight hours are increasing again.Yeah! To celebrate this we are starting February with another SOUP-er Sunday on the 3rd of February! Louise from Grow Wild will be sharing some delicious home made soup with us and if weather permits do a little cooking demo as well. Everyone is welcome to join us from 2-5pm! The attached photo was taken at a previous Soup-er Sunday. We are keen to continue to share food and conversation at Common Growth – and we’re looking for more people to get involved with the cooking, sharing and the gardening, so do come along some time!

As ever there are plenty of tasks to get involved in at Common Growth, such as finishing the building of the greenhouse, building steps, digging the pond, and constructing the pergola. There is also still some ‘Elephant Garlic’ to plant – I know a bit late for garlic, but better than never (I’m not sure that’s a phrase in English – I’m translating from Dutch!)

Hope to see you on Sunday.

P.S. Do make sure your come prepared for mud and rain! (I’m not sure I’m selling it here, but MetCheck said only Light Rain for Sunday afternoon, so no excuses!)

A hive of activity at Common Growth

Sunday 6ht of January 2013

I was pleasantly surprised to see that on a miserable grey Sunday so many volunteers braved the cold and came to help out at the Common Growth garden. With the promise of cups of tea, hot soup and cakes as a reward, 12 of us set out to build the greenhouse and planters, fix the gate, put up a trellis, paint the fence and harvest Jerusalem Artichokes (see the photos). This working together, conversations, camaraderie and sharing food is exactly what Common Growth is about! So thank you very much to Kayvan, Tamsin, Isabella, Pat, Arij, Carlos, Jim, Carlo, Richard,  Zuhura and Rich for all your efforts to make it such a brilliant start of 2013!

Over the next few weeks we’ll continue to do some building work at the garden, so that we are ready to start the next growing season come Spring. Do come along if you’d like to help with any of these jobs: finishing the greenhouse, doing some landscaping, making a path, painting the fence, turning the compost heaps, building a new pond, building a pergola. We’ll also continue to serve freshly made soup in the garden, as we intend Souper Sunday to become a regular community event for all.

By the way, the greenhouse was bought with support from Grow Wild (www.growwild.org.uk) – and we can’t wait to start using it!

Hope to see you on a Sunday from 2-5ish in the Common Growth garden on Sandbourne Rd.
