Sunday 6th 10am – 12pm.
Walking Tour of Deptford’s Green Spaces.
Owen Hodgkinson from Assembly will be instigating a walk and a discussion about Deptford’s green spaces. The walk is an investigation to map Deptfords green Spaces – discussing what part they play in Deptfords urban environment, what unseen politics is fought on them, how they change, how there lost and how they are found. Most importantly how they could be connected. From 2pm to 4pm, a workshop hosted by Bridget Mckenzie of Beuysterous will aim to tease out these connections and links. (See details below.)
The tour will start at 10am at the entrance of Old Tidemill School on Frankham Street and will first visit the Wonky Prong community garden in Crossfields Estate.
The tour will then move onto the Deptford Creekside Centre and then to Sue Godfrey Nature Park. After which, the ‘Don’t Dump on Deptford’ campaign will be discussed on the land next to St Paul’s Church, followed by visiting another campaign at Sayes Court Garden, a campaign to reinstate John Evelyn’s 17th Century garden.
Next on the list is a community garden taking the name of this renowned horticulturist, the John Evelyn community garden on the Pepys Estate founded by local residents in 2005.
Heading back towards Deptford the tour will drop by The Albany garden and café, to see some new feathered arrivals with the added opportunity of some delicious food at the launch of the Yam Yam festival. The tour will end back at Old Tidemill School to find out what has been going on in the Wildlife garden since the school closed down.
If anyone knows any of the organisers from theses sites or information about them – please get in touch with owen@assemblyse8.org
Beuysterous Workshop.

Human wellbeing depends on tree health, and for this, trees depend on the integrity of their communities. Trees need each other partly because they are helpfully connected beneath the soil by fungus. This workshops explores the the rooty, rhizomatic kinds of fungus called Mychorrizae that help trees thrive. What can we learn from Mychorrizae to design healthier communities of people? Responding to the Just Dis Trees in the square, which are all about trees and community, come to create an installation of nodes and threads amongst trees in the garden of the Old Tidemill School.
Facilitated by Bridget McKenzie, founder of Beuysterous, a campaign of creative actions for trees.

Dear friends and partners,

As people who are active in the New Cross community, you are invited to take part in an innovative training course called Talk For Health, which enables people both to get and to give the benefits of therapeutic talk as an ongoing practice in their lives.

The RSA is fully funding the programme, which will take place over four weeks (one day a week – either a Saturday or a Thursday), as part of our Connected Communities scheme. It will be run by Nicky Forsythe, a trained psychotherapist, whose evidence-based approach is based on the idea that 1. Having the skills to share feelings with supportive peers is good for your own mental health, and 2. That therapeutic talk does not necessarily have to be carried out by professionals – instead, anybody in society should have access to the skills to support people’s mental health, just as many of us have skills in first aid to help people’s physical health.

The course will run either on each Saturday in August this year, or on Thursdays or Saturdays this September, depending on which option is most popular with people who are interested in taking the course.

Nicky will be spending some time in New Cross between 24th-27th June and hopes to meet as many of you as possible in order to answer questions and give you more information about the course. I shall be calling you over the phone in the next few days to see if you would be interested in meeting Nicky, either at your place of work or at a mutually convenient location.

In the meantime, please feel free to read Nicky’s website for more information – http://www.positive-therapy.co.uk/the-talk-for-health-programme-nicky-forsythe/ – or contact me by email or phone with any queries.

I hope that many of you will choose to take part. If you have colleagues or service-users who may be interested in joining the course then please let me know as we can fund up to 30 people to take the course.

With thanks and kind regards,
